WHAT TO WATCH FOR
– The Brewers affiliates will look to make more contact on Friday than they did on Opening Day as the Sky Sox, Shuckers and Timber Rattlers combined to strike out 42 times. Colorado Springs players whiffed 11 times, while the T-Rats piled up 15 strike outs and the Shuckers punched out a total of 16 times.
– After being rained out on Thursday night, the Carolina Mudcats will take another crack at Opening Day in Frederick on Friday evening. Corbin Burnes, the Mudcats scheduled starter for Thursday will instead make the start on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6pm Milwaukee time.
– The Brewers welcome the defending World Series Champions into Miller Park on Friday night as they open up a four game series with the Chicago Cubs. Milwaukee dropped three of their first four games of the year, despite outscoring the Colorado Rockies 17-16. Jimmy Nelson takes the ball for the Crew, making his first start of 2017.
THURSDAY’S PLAYER OF THE DAY
Ryan Cordell (Colorado Springs Sky Sox)
Acquired from Texas as the player to be named later in last season’s trade that sent Jonathan Lucroy and Jeremy Jeffress to the Rangers, Cordell had a nice debut in his first game in the Brewers system. He doubled in his first at-bat, then followed that up with a home run in his second trip to the plate, driving in both of the Sky Sox runs in their 2-1 win over Omaha.
Three Brewers minor leaguers share a birthday on Friday, including Milwaukee’s top pitching prospect, lefty Josh Hader, who turns 23. In addition, right-hander Josh Uhen will be celebrating his 25th birthday while fellow righty Angel Ventura turns 24.
