Catching up on some news from earlier in the week, the Brewers named their Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month winners for April on Tuesday with Carolina first baseman Jake Gatewood and Biloxi right-hander Jorge Lopez earning the awards respectively.
The 21-year-old Gatewood has been a pleasant surprise for the Mudcats early on, hitting .329/.433/.573 in 23 April contests. His four home runs in April tied for the team lead and his 16 walks and nine doubles were also team highs.
The Brewers opted to have Lopez head back to Biloxi rather than sending him to Colorado Springs and it’s looked like a smart decision thus far. In five April starts, Lopez went 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA, striking out 30 batters over 26 innings.
