Profile: Drafted by the Brewers in the fourth round of last year’s draft out of St. Mary’s the right-handed throwing Burnes signed for slot value and got his feet wet with three AZL outings for Maryvale before receiving a promotion to Class-A Wisconsin. He made some adjustments heading into 2017 and enjoyed great success, earning Pitcher of the Year honors while reaching Double-A. With a fastball that sits between 92-95 mph, Burnes clocked in as high as 97 while pitching in the Cape Cod League and also mixes in a sharp breaking ball and a developing changeup. Opposing hitters managed just a .185 batting average against Burnes in his pro debut and he has the ability to work deep into games.

2016: Burnes made his pro debut with Maryvale last June, pitching in three Arizona League games and allowing just one run over seven innings while striking out ten. That got him promoted to Wisconsin where he worked as both a starter and reliever as part of the Timber Rattlers tandem pitching plan. He tossed four scoreless innings in each of his first two games, striking out four and earning his first win at Dayton on July 16th. He didn’t go more that three innings in an outing after that but still managed to tie a season high with five strikeouts in his second to last appearance of the season at Kane County.

2017: After getting a taste of A-ball in 2016, Burnes began 2017 at High-A Carolina, where he went 5-0 with a 1.05 ERA in ten starts, then received a promotion to Double-A Biloxi. He made 16 more starts there, going 3-3 with a 2.10 ERA and was selected as Milwaukee’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
