CORTES, JOMAR

Position: Shortstop

DOB: September 4, 1998

Height: 6’3″ / Weight: 190

Bats: Right / Throws: Right

40-man roster: No

How acquired: Draft (37th Round, 2016)

Profile: Drafted by the Brewers in the 37th round of the 2016 Draft out of the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy in Puerto Rico, Cortes signed with Milwaukee and was sent to Maryvale to begin his career in the rookie Arizona League.  Sidelined after just four games due to an undisclosed injury, Cortes went on to miss all of 2017 as well, landing on the 60-day disabled list.  With a tall and skinny frame, Cortes has room to grow, but may need to move off of shortstop eventually.  He handles the position adequately for now, but he’s not a fast runner and may need to move to a corner.  A switch-hitter in high school, Cortes worked exclusively a a right-handed hitter in the AZL and has a nice, short stroke that should generate plenty of line drives.

2016: Milwaukee assigned Cortes to the rookie Arizona League in Maryvale after signing him following the draft.  He saw action in just four games there however, collecting one hit in eleven at-bats before having his season cut short due to injury.

2017:  Cortes missed all of the 2017 season with an undisclosed injury as the Brewers placed him on the 60-day disabled list.
