Profile: Born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, Gomez attended college at St. Thomas University in Florida before being drafted by Milwaukee in the 39th round of the 2016 draft.  He signed with Milwaukee and was assigned to Maryvale to begin his career with the Brewers’ affiliate in the rookie Arizona League.  He opened up 2017 in extended spring training, then moved up to Helena once their season began in June.  At just five-foot-three, Gomez has overcome long odds to make it as far as he has, but the deck will continually be stacked against him due to his size.  Despite that fact, he’s shown some nice pop in his bat, displaying good bat speed and a compact swing that helps him drive the ball.  He also has displayed better than average patience at the plate and can be a threat when he gets on base with speed that rates as average or better,

2016:  Sent to Arizona following his signing, Gomez got his feet wet in the AZL, appearing in 45 games while seeing time at all three outfield spots.  He hit .280 in 161 at-bats and posted a .372 on base percentage while also stealing eight bags.

2017:  Gomez moved up to Helena in 2017 and again bounced around the outfield, showing the versatility to play all three spots.  He showed an increase in power as well, with 21 of his 49 hits going for extra bases, including six home runs, showing you can’t always judge a book by its cover.  He finished the year with an OPS of .807 and posted almost as many walks as strikeouts.
