LAZAR, MAX

Position: Pitcher

DOB: June 3, 1999

Height: 6’3″ / Weight: 165

Bats: Right / Throws: Right

40-man roster: No

How acquired: Drafted (11th round, 2017)

Profile:  Despite concerns about his signability, the Brewers used their 11th round pick to select Lazar out of high school in 2017.  Their gamble paid off as they were able to ink the prep right-hander for $475,000, luring him away from an offer to Florida Atlantic.  He joined the Brewers’ affiliate in the Arizona League after signing his contract and saw action in seven games during his first season of pro ball.  With good size and a fastball already sitting in the low-90’s, Lazar has a repeatable delivery with a high 3/4 arm slot.  He also throws a changeup and breaking ball that are still developing but his heater is his meal ticket.  A pitch with good late action, Lazar throws a lot of strikes, displaying better than average command for a player so young.

2017:  Most thought that when Lazar didn’t go early on in the 2017 Draft, he would head to college at FAU, but the Brewers were able to get him signed, and they sent him to Maryvale for his first pro action.  He pitched in seven games there, making one start, and went 0-2 with a 5.93 ERA, but managed to strike out 14 in 13.2 innings of work, while issuing just one walk.
