Profile:  Signed by the Brewers out of Cuba in 2017 for a bonus reported to be in excess of $800,000, Martinez was selected to play in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, representing France, where his father played professionally.  With a big fastball that sat in the 92-93 mph range, some viewed Martinez as a pitcher, but the Brewers liked his bat and signed him with the intention of having him play the field.  He began his pro career in the Dominican Republic with the DSL Brewers, then came stateside in August, finishing out his first season with the AZL Brewers.  Standing six-foot-six, Martinez presents a big target at first base, where he saw the bulk of his action in his first season.  A left-handed slugger, Martinez should generate plus power as he develops and already shows an advanced approach at the plate, patiently waiting for pitches that he can drive to all parts of the field.

2017:  Having pitched for France in the WBC qualifiers, Martinez signed a free agent deal with Milwaukee and was sent to the Dominican Summer League to begin his career.  He appeared in 38 games there, hitting .257/.419/.434 with nine doubles, a triple and three home runs, and earned a promotion stateside in mid-August.  He finished out the year in Maryvale, playing in 11 more games there, collecting seven hits in 42 at-bats.
