Profile: Signed by the Brewers out of Venezuela in 2011, Ortega spent his first two seasons pitching in the Dominican Summer League before making his way stateside in 2013. He pitched for Milwaukee’s AZL affiliate in Maryvale then moved up to Helena in 2014. Milwaukee saw enough progress from Ortega that they opted to skip him past Low-A Wisconsin, sending him to High-A Brevard County in 2015. After turning in his best season as a pro and proving to be one of the best starters in the Florida State League, Ortega advanced to Double-A in 2016, spending the whole year with Biloxi. Using a fastball, curveball and changeup, Ortega exhibits exceptional command of all three offerings, consistently pounding the strike zone and rarely walking opposing hitters. His fastball isn’t dominant, sitting around 90 mph, but he knows how to pitch, aggressively attacking hitters to get ahead in counts and working to contact.

After signing with Milwaukee in April of 2011, Ortega got his first taste of pro baseball in the Dominican Summer League, where he started 11 of the 13 games he pitched in for the Brewers. He posted a record of 4-6 with a 3.16 earned run average, tossing a pair of complete games with a WHIP of 1.09.

Ortega returned to the DSL in 2012, working exclusively as a starter in all 13 games he appeared in. He finished the year with a record of 6-5, notching a 2.54 ERA and earned a spot on the Dominican Summer League All-Star team.

The Brewers brought Ortega stateside in 2013, assigning him to their Arizona League affiliate when their season opened in late June. He logged 56.1 innings over fourteen appearances, five of which were starts, and went 2-5 with a 4.15 ERA.

Opening up 2014 in extended spring training, Ortega was sent to Helena in the Pioneer League once their season got underway in June. He started 15 games there, going 4-5 with a 4.23 earned run average, proving to be a workhorse for the Helena pitching staff.

Milwaukee got aggressive with Ortega in 2015, choosing to have him skip Low-A Wisconsin, sending him to High-A Brevard County to start the year. He responded in spectacular fashion, posting a .241 ERA in 22 games, 20 of which he started. He logged a career-low WHIP of 1.04, walking just 11 batters over 141.2 innings of work. Ortega earned a spot on the Florida State League All-Star team and also received a late bump to Triple-A Colorado Springs where he tossed six innings of one run ball in a spot start for the Sky Sox.

Ortega moved up to Double-A Biloxi in 2016, looking to build upon his success from a season earlier. While his walk numbers remained impressively low, he didn’t have as much luck fooling more advanced hitters. He finished the year with a record of just 1-9 over 18 starts with a 4.99 ERA.
