SIBRIAN, JOSE

Position: Catcher

DOB: October 24, 1998

Height: 5’11” / Weight: 175

Bats: Right / Throws: Right

40-man roster: No

How acquired: Free Agent (July 2, 2015)

Profile: Milwaukee inked the Venezuelan-born Sibrian as an International free agent in July of 2015 at the age of sixteen for a reported bonus of $550,000. After joining the Brewers in Maryvale for instructional league that fall, he made his professional debut in the Dominican Summer League in 2016. Sibrian doesn’t have a ton of experience behind the plate, but has shown the tools to be a plus defender, gunning down opposing base stealers at a 39% clip in 2016. At such a young age, Sibrian still has plenty of growing to do, but he has packed on some extra muscle since signing and displays a strong arm and solid receiving skills. At the plate, Sibrian generates decent bat speed and has shown some gap power that should improve as he develops, making him an intriguing lower level catching prospect for the Brewers.

2016: After playing in the Brewers instructional league in Maryvale there was some thought that Sibrian would follow Gilbert Lara’s path and make his official debut stateside, but the Brewers opted to have the youngster start out in the Dominican Summer League in 2016. In 32 games there, he hit .216 with five doubles and 22 runs batted in, showing better than advertised defense, and earning a spot on the DSL All-Star team.

2017: Sibrian opened up the 2017 season in extended spring training, but did not see action with any of Milwaukee’s minor league affiliates during the year.
