Profile:  Having worked primarily as a reliever during his collegiate career at North Carolina Central, Vernon was chosen by Milwaukee in the 28th round in 2016 following his senior season.  He signed with the Brewers and was sent to Maryvale to begin his pro career.  He split time between Helena in Wisconsin a year later, bouncing back-and-forth between the two affiliates.  A two-pitch pitcher who features a low-90’s fastball that touches 94 mph at times, Vernon also has a decent slider and generates a decent amount of swing and miss.  He has the size of an innings eating starter, but the lack of a third pitch will keep him in the bullpen.

2016:  Vernon was assigned to Milwaukee’s affiliate in the Arizona League following the draft and went on to appear in 14 games for the AZL Brewers.  He converted on all three save chances he had and posted an earned run average of 2.55 over 17.2 innings of work.

2017:  The Brewers sent Vernon to Class-A Wisconsin in early April and he pitched fairly well before a couple of rough outings in late-May/early-June.  He dropped down to Helena for a few weeks after that and righted the ship, earning a promotion back to Wisconsin in July.  He finished the year with an ERA of 4.58 between the two levels combined and put up impressive strikeout numbers, racking up 42 punchouts in 37.1 innings of work.
