Profile:  The son of Brewers scout Shawn Whalen and brother of Cardinals infield prospect Brady Whalen, Shawn was selected by Milwaukee in the 38th round of the 2016 draft following his senior season at the University of Portland.  An older player who red-shirted in 2015 following an oblique injury and a bout of appendicitis, Whalen agreed to terms with the Brewers and began his career with Helena.  He moved up to Class-A Wisconsin in 2017 and spent most of the season there before moving to High-A Carolina late in the year.  An outfielder with decent speed, Whalen played second base for much of his college career and is a cerebral player who is a good athlete that grinds out everything, making him a tough out.

2016:  After his fifth and final season at the University of Portland, Whalen signed with Milwaukee and was assigned to Helena in the Pioneer League to begin his professional career.  In 47 games there, Whalen hit .222 with a home run and eight stolen bases in eight attempts.

2017:  Whalen made the jump to full-season ball in 2017, advancing to Class-A Wisconsin to start the year.  He bounced between the active roster and the disabled list for much of the season, batting .213 with a pair of home runs in 29 games.  He moved up to Carolina at the end of July and finished out the season with the Mudcats, hitting .167 in 12 games there.
